Daruharidra


Description :
A small evergreen shrub grows up to the height of 3 meters. The leaves are strong with fine whorled venation, straight, but with dentate margins. Inflorescence 5 to 8 cm long, with large yellow colored flowers. The fruits are bluish purple and small.
The roots possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. The drug is used as a cholagogue, stomachic, laxative, diaphoretic, antipyretic and antiseptic. It is administered externally for painful eye afflictions and hemorrhoids. The root bark is useful in amenorrhoea. 
It has an essential active ingredient, Berberine, which possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is used in the treatment of leucorrhoea. It is also used in vaginal enema.

Medicinal Uses:
  1. Diabetes: The extracts of root, as well as the stem bark4 of the Indian Barberry plant have hypoglycaemic as well as anti-oxidant effects. As a result, it could be of great use in the treatment of Diabetes.
  2. Liver damage: Liver damage caused by CCl4 as well as paracetamol-induced liver toxicity can be prevented and cured by the extracts of the fruits of Indian Barberry since the extracts inhibit the Microsomal Drug Metabolizing Enzymes (MDME) in the liver.
  3. Bacterial and fungal diseases: The extracts of the root as well as the stem of the Indian Barberry help in preventing diseases caused by bacteria such as Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The extracts were also very effective against fungal strains such as that of Aspergillus flavus.
  4. Colon cancer: Colon cancer was effectively treated with the extracts of Indian Barberry since the extracts of the plant were effectively cytotoxic on the cancer cells.
  5. Stomach disorders: Piles, dysentery, diarrhoea, ulcers can all be treated effectively with the extracts of this tree.
  6. Skin disorders: The decoction of the bark and root bark helps clean sores, and wounds—it leads to the easy formation of scar tissue.
  7. Malarial fever: The infusion of the root bark of Indian Barberry is effective in relieving pyrexia and in checking paroxysms.
  8. Eye disorders: The root-bark, roots, and stems, when boiled in water, forms into a semi-solid mass that is used to cure conjunctivitis, and ophthalmia when applied externally on the eyelid. The mass is called rasaut, and has been widely used as a native medicine for eye disorders.
                                  
Dosage:
Decoction: 5 -10 ml
Rasanjan: 1-3 gm
Fruit: 5 -10 gm
