Joint and Muscle Pain

According to Ayurveda mostly Joint & Muscle pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. It is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion. )This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata , it results in a disease called  amavata that all results of Joint Pains.

Symptoms

The main symptom of this disease is severe pain in the affected joints. The tissues in and around the joints become inflamed and movement of the joint becomes extremely painful. Untreated arthritis may lead to permanent deformity of the affected joints.

Fever

Immense pain & stiffness in affected muscles, specially stiffness and pain (i.e., fingers, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles) in the morning.

Root Causes

The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Joint pain as a symptom. There are likely to be other possible causes.

Causes include both internal and external factors. Ama associated with Vata (internal moving body air) quickly moves to different parts of the body and accumulates where circulation is sluggish or slow such as the hands, knees and other bone joints filling the blood vessels with a waxy type material. It is also more common in old age when Vata naturally increases in the body. Meat diet, foods such as ice cream, to much concentrated dairy such as aged cheese or goods of sour cream or cheese with your meals, cold foods especially during cold weather which weaken the digestion, heavy cakes, pastries and candies, packaged and processed foods with little fiber are the main dietary causes. This causes heaviness and weakness of the heart which becomes the seat of the disease.

Home remedies for Snoring

The sound that occurs due to the vibration of soft palate, which relaxes when one sleeps is called snoring. Though snoring is not particularly harmful, except for the disturbance that it causes to the snorer and the people around, it could probably lead to serious sleep disorders like the Upper Respiratory Resistance Syndrome or Obstructive Sleep Apnea, wherein breathing could stop periodically while sleeping.

Certain conditions like swelling of throat and nasal passages, colds, sinus infections and lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking and alcohol could trigger snoring. Children have the tendency to snore when they have enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Middle aged men are more prone to snoring than women. Couple of remedies for snoring-

Sleeping on the side, by tucking a pillow into the back helps prevent snoring.

Stick a nasal adhesive strip across the soft part of the nose, just above nostrils prior to bed time. The plastic bands that are embedded in the adhesive pad, helps in tightening and lifting the sides of nose, while also maintaining airflow while sleeping.

Pour three to four drops of warm Brahmi ghee or plain ghee into each nostril in the morning and prior to bed time.

If overweight, try to lose weight through regular walks or any such exercise, which helps an obese person to breathe easily.
Take care to go to bed at a scheduled time every day to get adequate sleep.

Snorers should strictly avoid use of sleeping pills, sedative antihistamines or alcohol. Smoking should be strictly avoided, as it irritates the nasal and throat lining.

In case there is no relief from snoring by following any of the said methods, or if the pauses in breathing during sleep exceeds ten seconds, or in case the snorer feels more tired and irritable during the day, it is best to consult a physician and seek suggestions.

Relevence of Ayurveda in today’s life

The diseases pertaining to life science are neither contagious nor influenced by genetics. These diseases breed in exhausted bodies that are out-of-shape due to unhealthy and frenzied lifestyles. These diseases involve both mind and body and hence holistic approach of Ayurveda is essential in bringing about well being and good health and plays a major role in treating diseases prevalent in today’s world.

The advantages of holistic treatments for combating heart diseases, diabetes and cancer, as in Ayurvedic literature has already been proven and accepted in countries like Japan, Singapore and Finland.

Achieving a healthy long life actually depends on the extent to which an individual remains healthy in his day to day life. For achieving this, a controlled mind in a controlled body is essential. The ideal way in which an individual with a balanced constitution (Sama Prakriti) should proceed with day to day lifestyle is described in Ayurvedic texts. This can be modified depending on the constitution and diseases of an individual.  For maximizing the effect of a soothing treatment, leading a healthy lifestyle is essential.

Ayurveda emphasizes that an individual should adopt healthy habits like regular routine schedule for sleep, proper cleansing practices, body massage, meditation, regular physical exercises, yoga, good clothing habits, a balanced diet depending on the weather, adequate intake of fluids, avoiding anger and stress and maintaining healthy relationships, sex life that is socially permissible and self education.

The holistic approach of Ayurveda involves usage of drug, behavioral changes and diet in tackling problems of mind and body to ensure vitality and good health. In Ayurveda, an illness is treated by four main procedures; cleansing (Samshodhana), Palliation (Samshamana), rejuvenation (Rasayana) and spiritual and psychological healing (Satvavajaya). When there is an imbalance of doshas, the lifestyles and dietary managements that are based on these doshas get disturbed.

Meaning and Principles of Ayurveda

Meaning of Ayurveda
Ayurveda comprising of Ayur (life) and Veda (Scince or knowledge) is a holistic healing science which is in other words called “Science of life”. Ayurveda deals with the complete way of life, rather than just the treatment of diseases.

Basic principles
Ayurveda considers the humanity and universe as a common origin, and considers nature to be made of three main qualities (also called gunas). These gunas namely Sattva, Rajas and Tamas are the inner qualities found in all material forms of nature.

Ayurveda also considers the entire universe to be governed by five major elements called Panchamahabhutas which includes space, fire, water, air and earth. The entire human structure is considered to be made of Seven tissues (also known as Dhatus) which is the plasma, adipose tissue, muscle, bone marrow, bone, blood and reproductive tissue. From the liquids of all these tissues, Ojas (energy) which is the refined ultimate product of metabolism and digestion, is formed. Ojas is also considered to connect the consciousness and physiology of an individual and is responsible for developing immunity in the body.
