Description :

Althea officinalis, not the white puffy confection roasted over a fire - has been used for more than 2000 years as each a food and a medicine. The Romans, Egyptians, Chinese and Syrians used marshmallow as a source of food, whereas the Arabs made poultices from its leaves and applied them to the skin to reduce inflammation. Both the root and leaves contain a mucilaginous substance called mucilage. Once mixed with water, it forms a slick gel that's accustomed coat the throat and stomach to reduce irritation. It is also applied topically to assuage cracked skin. 
Few scientific studies have checked out the consequences of marshmallow in humans. Most of its advised uses return from an extended history of use in ancient healing systems.

Medicinal Uses :

• Mouthwash prepared from roots is used in inflammations. Infusion of flowers is used to appease inflamed skin.
• Dried roots are used as a toothbrush and is chewed by teething children.
